"Field sketching and painting lies at the core of my work as an artist.  My sketchbooks are the "raw material" of my art.  When working on location, I always carry a 9" x 12" spiral-bound sketchbook and an assortment of soft drawing pencils.  Color is added in the field or immediately upon my return to the studio.  Along with the sketchbook, I also carry loose sheets of watercolor paper for situations which allow for the development of finished works on-the-spot.
Since 1983, when I began sketching outdoors on a regular basis, I've filled more than sixty sketchbooks with hundreds of drawings of birds, mammals, plants and landscapes."
